MARION "SHINE"ZODY

1936-2018

WOOSTER---MARION "SHINE" ZODY, 82, of Kister Road, Wooster, died Sunday evening, May 27, 2018 in The Avenue at Wooster, following a five-month illness.

He was born March 7, 1936 in Perrysville and was the son of the late Devid Fess and Alta (Smail) Zody. Shine was a 1954 graduate of Perrysville High School, received his bachelor's degree in 1958 from Ashland College and his master's degree in 1968 from the University of Akron.

While in high school he earned 13 letters for football, basketball, track and baseball. He was the leading scorer in Ohio and the nation in six-man football during his senior year. He earned second team in All-Ohio in basketball as a senior and honorable mention as a junior. He pitched a no-hitter in baseball and qualified at the state track meet in the shot put and discus. At Ashland College, he also earned 13 varsity letters and was a football All-League selection all four years and led the nation in punting as a college senior.  Following college, he earned a professional football tryout with both the New York Titans and the London (Ontario) Lords.

Shine began his teaching and coaching career in 1958 at Wellington High School. In 1960, he became the head football coach, head baseball coach, assistant basketball and track coach, as well as the athletic director at Shreve High School.  In 1962, the new Triway High School opened and he continued his career teaching physical education, industrial arts, history, driver's education, and Occupational Work Adjustment until his retirement in 1990.

Shine was responsible for coining the Titan as the Triway mascot. From 1979-86 he held the position of Triway athletic director and coached freshman football.  He was an assistant football coach at The College of Wooster for nine seasons and at Ashland College for three seasons.  In his spare time, he officiated basketball, wrestling and track and umpired baseball for many years.  Following his retirement, he worked in the Ashland University Admissions Department for 10 years and served on the Triway Local Schools Board of Education from 1998 to 2008. Shine was elected to the Ashland County Hall of Fame and the Ashland University Hall of Fame.

He was a member of the Shreve United Methodist Church, a 54-year member of the Shreve Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow and was a member of the Ashland University Gridiron Club. Shine enjoyed woodworking and following all his children's and grandchildren's school and athletic activities.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Klenk) Zody, whom he married Aug. 8, 1959; sons  Steve (Jacki) Zody of Wooster and Mark (Mike Reep)Zody of North Ridgeville; daughter-in-law Beth Zody of Pickerington; grandchildren Colton Zody, Zachary Zody, Nathan Zody and Lauren Zody; and brother Gaylord (Norma) Zody of Loudonville.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son Scott Zody; sisters Juanita Zody, Donna Richards and Catherine Thornburg; and brothers David Jr., Albert, Henry "Zeke", Donald "Popeye", Harold and Marvin Zody. 

Funeral services with be held Thursday, May 31, at 11a.m. at Shreve United Methodist Church, 430 N. Main St., Shreve, with the Rev. Mike Grant Officiating.  There will be a luncheon immediately following the funeral service at the church.  Graveside services will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, Perrysville.  Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Shreve United Methodist Church.
